SHI Ending Support for Internet Explorer 7 & 8

As of January 1, 2016, Microsoft ended support and updates for all browsers older than Internet Explorer 11. SHI is following suit and is ending support for IE 7 & 8, including compatibility modes.

What does this mean for you?

When accessing SHI.com, features may stop working as we begin to roll out new designs to our site that leverage new web technologies. For example, we have made updates to our navigation and search that may not display correctly in IE 7 and 8.

Beyond some of the issues you may have noticed on SHI.com, running an older browser means you are susceptible to exploits, bugs and security issues. Additionally, these older browsers were not built for the modern web, and many features of modern websites may not be enabled for you. To ensure SHI.com functions as intended, you will need to update your browser.

What is the solution?

The simple answer is to upgrade to a modern browser such as Microsoft IE 11 or Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. However, in many corporations and businesses, the IT department determines how and when the company’s software is upgraded, which includes software like the operating system (OS) and browser. For a variety of reasons, companies may continue to use outdated software which can then cause sites to perform sub-optimally.

If you are unable to download and install a modern web browser on your own, contact your IT department and let them know that the browser you are using is no longer supported by Microsoft or SHI. Why is SHI ending support for IE 7 & 8?

Ending support for old versions of IE enables us to leverage the numerous features that have been designed since IE 7 and 8 were originally released. The movement away from older versions of IE has been in progress for nearly two years, and this shift will help us better adapt to ever-changing technologies.

Below is technical information that may help determine how to solve browser compatibility issues for your organization.

Compatibility Mode

Some users need to operate their Internet Explorer web browser in compatibility mode. This is often because of legacy applications that use features unique to older versions of the browser, and thus break when using modern browsers. The SHI.com website emits code that tells the web browser that our site really can work on modern browsers (we suggest IE11 or Edge). This is sufficient to avoid the problem for users that have the compatibility configuration set locally.

Enterprise Mode

Some customers use “Enterprise Mode” to force Internet Explorer to behave as an older browser. This is managed centrally by the corporate IT department so they can push out these settings to everyone in the organization with a single operation. Enterprise Mode forces IE & Edge to adhere to the company’s specified configuration, while SHI.com can only send code that recommends a modern browser. The back-level compatibility set by Enterprise Mode overrides what our website tells the browser. The result is that the old-fashioned browser takes priority over the features and functionality we have designed for SHI.com, resulting in a website that does not display as intended.

Enterprise Mode is not a single blanket command that blocks modern behavior for every site on the Internet (or does not need to be configured in that manner). With Enterprise Mode your settings can be targeted so that legacy apps that need older browser behavior can be set to the specific version required, while other sites are free to leverage current technologies.

Microsoft provides a tool called the “Enterprise Mode Site List Manager” that allows IT departments to easily manage this list. This tool can be used to keep a list of all sites that need to display in older or newer browser versions as necessary. The file it produces can then be deployed around the organization using the normal Group Policy tools.

Browser Support

SHI websites are optimized to run on the versions of Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox that are currently supported by their respective publishers. If you must specify compatibility modes, for SHI.com, you should use the newest choice available today (preferably Edge or IE11).
