What do you see in the Internet? Cost-effective WAN infrastructure? Competitive business advantages? Closer ties to partners, customers and vendors? While few can debate that the Net is rich with untapped potential, to date, it has lacked the manageability, security and performance of your corporate network. Fortunately, that’s all about to change.
That’s because Novell® BorderManager provides rock-solid Internet security that’s extremely easy to manage. As the first integrated family of directory-based network services, BorderManager manages, secures and accelerates user access to information at every network border--the connection points between your network, other networks and the Internet.

Through a single point of administration, you can manage your company’s security policies, protect your confidential information, establish user access privileges to Internet content and reduce WAN connectivity costs. BorderManager significantly improves intranet and Internet access performance, and provides a standards-based performance foundation to support your company’s network infrastructure.

    REALIZING ’NET BENEFITS

The Internet is living proof of the most basic business principle--with risk comes reward. Some companies have been cautiously testing the waters, only to watch their competitors aggressively dive in and deliver innovative services. Clearly, for Internet adopters, the degree of success relates directly to their ability to manage, secure and accelerate performance of their Internet connections. BorderManager is the best solution available today to give you a competitive advantage for Internet success.

CENTRALIZED ADMINISTRATION SAVES TIME AND MONEY

"The firewall has the opportunity to become the framework for a fully featured security platform that can address the four major aspects of security (authentication, encryption, access control, and firewall). META Group believes most of the firewall vendors are not in a position to provide these solutions."
    Meta Group , July, 1997

BorderManager provides a single point of network administration through an easy-to-use, graphical utility. And since BorderManager includes Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™)--the world’s leading cross-platform, LDAP directory service, you can easily manage your company’s security policies and control user access to resources on the Internet and your corporate network. Unlike server-by-server administration, BorderManager’s central network-level administration saves you considerable time and money and reduces the chance for error. Administrators can simply update user or group information once--NDS automatically replicates this data and controls access across your entire system.

Because of it’s tight integration with the directory, BorderManager allows an administrator to define a user as a user, not an IP address. Together, BorderManager and NDS track, monitor, control and log the actions of every user on your network. BorderManager also helps you monitor and control outbound Internet access. You can easily define the types of Internet services employees can access, restricting those that negatively impact productivity (entertainment sites), or raise legal issues (objectionable material).

KEEPING PRIVATE PARTS PRIVATE The Internet is the ultimate learning, research and collaboration tool. Yet, with all the Net offers, it also raises legal and moral issues for businesses, schools and public libraries who provide access. BorderManager lets you easily block user access to inappropriate or productivity-draining content. Moreover, its single-point of administration and NDS integration mean it’s now affordable and feasible to manage access for thousands of users. The Plano, Texas school system, for example, now provides managed Internet access to 40,000 students--something they simply couldn’t have implemented without BorderManager.

BRINGING DIRECTORY-ENABLED COMPUTING TO THE NET

Directory-enabled computing is the most viable way to integrate multiple computing platforms and applications and extend them in a controlled manner to the Internet. With support for open Internet standards such as LDAP, Radius and X.500, and broad-based industry support, Novell Directory Services does just that.

NDS is available or soon will be on every major computing platform from all leading UNIX* environments and Windows* NT* Server to IBM* host systems. It is the directory of choice for the world’s largest data/telecommunications networks offered by companies such as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, NTT and others. With over 20 million users, NDS is the hands-down favorite of industry observers. Recognizing NDS with its 1997 Well-Connected Award, Network Computing Magazine wrote, "No other product even comes close to providing NDS’s functionality."

    SECURING YOUR NETWORK.

Clearly, your company’s most valuable assets are its intellectual property and its employees. BorderManager protects your confidential information and includes performance and user-level access control features to keep your employees focused and more productive. It builds on IntranetWare™, the industry’s most secure and reliable network platform, and the one most businesses rely on every day for their mission-critical needs. IntranetWare is designed to meet U.S. Government C2 Orange Book (TCSEC) and Red Book (TNI) security--the highest levels of security certification available.

FIREWALLS ALONE CAN’T TAKE THE HEAT. Many companies have already deployed firewalls on their network borders. Yet, in a recent report, Forrester Research concluded that current firewalls cannot scale to meet today’s demands, let alone those of tomorrow. They stated, "Firewalls could cope when the typical Internet connection was a 1.5 Mbps line. But with corporations upgrading to multiple 45 Mbps and 155 Mbps lines, firewalls just canÕt handle all network traffic, authentication, encryption and security policy administration for the enterprise."

BorderManager protects your confidential information from internal and external intruders with its advanced security services. BorderManager firewall services provide increased security through three levels of firewall protection including packet filtering (Level I firewall), circuit gateways (Level II firewall) and application proxy services (Level III firewall). Network address translation (NAT) services mask IP addresses from outsiders and allow you to utilize unregistered IP addresses to connect to the Internet. And, BorderManager Virtual Private Network (VPN) services deliver secure, encrypted connections over the Internet and reduce your costs for expensive dedicated private lines.

    GOOD FIREWALLS MAKE GOOD NEIGHBORS.

Everyone needs privacy, and companies are no different. While firewalls are a prerequisite for securing your corporate network from outsiders, simple packet filtering alone no longer provides adequate protection. That’s why BorderManager also includes application proxy services, network address translation and a circuit gateway for IPX/IP and IP/IP traffic to filter out would-be intruders. And of course, BorderManager user-level security complements firewalls you may already have installed.

    SECURE INTERNET CONNECTIONS ENSURE PRIVACY

While the Internet’s meandering grid ensures ultimate redundancy, it also makes it challenging to establish a secure connection. BorderManager’s VPN service provides site-to-site encryption, enabling you to build secure connections through the Internet and eliminate expensive dedicated line costs. For example, companies with remote satellite offices can now leverage the Internet’s affordable WAN infrastructure, or create a secure extranet to automate processes and improve collaboration among vendors and partners.

A PERFORMANCE BOOST FOR THE NET

    CACHE IN ON HIGHER PERFORMANCE

Ever notice that junctions are typically where freeway traffic slows to a standstill? The Internet is no different. Thanks to BorderManager, you can eliminate the unnecessary waiting associated with Internet and intranet access, allowing you to keep employees productive and customers happy.

BorderManager’s sophisticated proxy caching services, including forward and reverse Web acceleration and hierarchical caching, significantly increases web access speeds. Its caching services provide a standards-based performance foundation to support your company’s network infrastructure and offset the performance penalty you pay for necessary web controls and filtering. In short, BorderManager--rated at over 4,000 hits per second and easily supporting more than 250 million hits per day for the largest company web sitesÐdelivers the most scalable cache services available today at any price. Like IntranetWare and Novell Directory Services, BorderManager scales to the largest enterprise systemsÑa critical issue when you consider the pace at which Internet traffic and Web access is growing.

    REDUCE YOUR COST OF OWNERSHIP

Considering that more than two thirds of your I.S. budget probably goes to administration and troubleshooting, here are a few things worth noting. BorderManager’s central-point of control and NDS integration significantly automate every aspect of system administration to save you time and money. Likewise, increasing performance and controlling outbound Web access helps keep employees more focused and productive.

    GET MORE FROM YOUR HARDWARE

Chances are your users are clamoring for faster Internet access and think beefier desktop systems are the only answer. BorderManager improves overall intranet and Internet access performance and eliminates the need to burn extra desktop CPU cycles. It offloads Web Server performance for a fraction of the cost of adding and administering more Web servers. And BorderManager reduces overall network traffic, too, to free critical server and router availability. In fact, according to Meta Group, "As Web traffic increases on the Internet and enterprise network links, HTTP proxy caching servers can hold off bandwidth investments."

    REDUCE COSTLY WAN LINK EXPENSES

BorderManager VPN services let you use the Internet’s backbone for your enterprise network--reducing your company’s need for dedicated private lines. Consider this: one BorderManager Web server accelerator on a single-processor Pentium system delivers the equivalent performance of five T-3 lines. Now that’s return on investment.

ACCELERATING THE WORLD-WIDE WAIT With success comes pressure. No one knows this better than Novell’s Webmaster. With www.novell.com receiving over a million hits per day, one of the industry’s busiest websites risked being overwhelmed by its own success.
BorderManager helped Novell increase security by moving its Web servers inside the corporate firewall and placing two BorderManager servers (as web server accelerators) on the outside. These servers handle all requests for cacheable objects, such as all HTML pages and graphics files, dramatically offloading total firewall and Web server traffic. Besides balancing server workload, using the second accelerator provides a backup should one system fail.
The results have been nothing short of phenomenal. Prior to adding BorderManager, Novell’s three Intel-based Web servers were handling fewer than 1000 connections per second. Adding BorderManager and two single-processor Pentium Pro* systems brought throughput up to 4000 connections per second. This solution increased security and saved considerable expense compared to replicating additional Web servers--without increasing administration demands. Perhaps most important, Novell customers and partners now get information they need much faster.
